Congratulations, you're either expecting or hoping to be soon! This is going to be such an exciting time in your life and one where you'll be making many decisions, starting with creating the perfect room for your new little addition. Don't stress, we're here to help!
I think nurseries might be my favorite rooms to decorate, mainly because you have all the control (AKA there won't be a three year old arguing that he wants a giant Paw Patrol figure painted on his bedroom wall, which will come soon enough). If you've followed along with us on Instagram you'll know that we love neutral decor with colorful accent pieces. It's so fun and easy to do that in a baby's bedroom!
In this post I'll show you some examples of rooms I love, a few of my favorite items right now and pictures of the gender-neutral nursery I created for my son recently.
The first thing you'll want to decide is if you want to have some sort of statement wall or a statement piece/theme in the room.
If you choose to do that, everything else will need to coordinate with it. Some of my favorites right now are statement walls with board and batten, wallpaper or a large piece above the crib, either a print or textured wall hanging. Are you looking for a gender neutral option that isn't grey or beige? Rust, olive and navy are great accent colors that work no matter what!
We love adding color, but we like to choose furniture pieces that can either be used again down the line, easily sold to someone else or transitioned to another room in the house. For that reason we try to keep them in timeless colors such as wood tones or white/black. Don't get us wrong, there is absolutely a time and place for a painted crib or dresser! You just want to think about the long term plan for that item and if you'll want to transition it or sell it.
If you choose to go with neutral furniture pieces, you want to get your color in on the walls or in some art and decor around the room.
One of our favorite ways to incorporate a color that goes with everything is by adding greenery! If you're anything like me, you may want to choose artificial plants to make sure you aren't having to replace them every few months after you inevitably forget to water them. I've rounded up a few choices for you to shop here:
Now for some wall art, floor texture and shelf decor!
Who doesn't love a sweet nursery print? Welcome to the time in your life when it's totally okay (and encouraged!) to choose the picture of the little baby bunny instead of the deep black oil painting. If you've chosen to go with a theme this is the perfect time to add it in. Look for a print or canvas that matches up and add some wall shelves to decorate. If your theme revolves more around a color, look at textured wall hangings such as macrame or flowered decor. Nothing is better than watching a baby smile at his or her own reflection, so add in a mirror above the dresser for a finishing touch! Last but not least, if you have hardwood or tile floors make sure you grab a thick rug for your little one to play on. Here are some suggestions from us:
Here are a couple pictures of the nursery I created for my son recently to give you some ideas. We chose to have a surprise rather than finding the gender ahead of time, but I wanted to make sure we had a color that could work no matter what.
